Ilio DiPaolo Scholarship Awards Night
Winners Announced on May 23, 2013

2013 Award Winners with Committee Members & Mrs. Ilio DiPaolo. What a GREAT night!
These scholarships are awarded to individuals who excel in academics as well athletics, while contributing to their family and community.

This idea to create an Award and Scholarship in the name of Ilio DiPaolo was through the efforts of Bud Carpenter, Randy Ribbeck, Jim Kelly and the entire Buffalo Bills Organization. They felt that his strong belief in education, athletics and family were essential for success. Ilio also believed that as your success grew so should the support you give your community.

The first year we were fortunate to give 2 scholarships through the financial support of many friends, organizations, businesses and individuals we didn’t even know. Then came “Legends”, the idea of Mark Stone, to bring Pro Wrestling back to Buffalo in the name of Ilio DiPaolo raising over $350,000 for Children’s Hospital, Buffalo Police Athletic League, Hunters’ Hope and many other organizations.

The Scholarship Fund has also grown through the South Shore Rotary Club Memorial Golf Outing, the Romulus Club Sports Nite and the Celebrity Chef Dinner.

A special recognition goes to all the people who have volunteered their time to make the “Scholarship Fund” a successful reality!

Bruno Sammartino is a Man's Man
by Bob Koshinski, AllSportsWNY.com
Dennis DiPaolo, Dominic DeNucci, Bruno Sammartino & Bob Koshinski
The DiPaolo Scholarship golf outing with this past week and along with the money made for a good cause, fun was had by all at the Wanakah Country Club. One of the highlights of this year’s tournament was the presence of former heavyweight world wrestling champ Bruno Sammartino and fellow countrymen Dominic DeNucci.

I obviously remember watching both Sammartino and DeNucci on the various pro wrestling television shows along with my good friend Ilio DiPaolo. Bruno has made several trips up to Buffalo since Ilio passed away to help with the fundraising for the DiPaolo Scholarship fund, but it has been at least ten years since his last visit. Bruno is half the size of what he was when he wrestled, but even at a reduced size and advanced age he looks formidable.

At his physical peak, Bruno Sammartino was six foot one and weighed 280 pounds, most of it muscle. How strong was Bruno? In 1959 Bruno set a world record in the bench press with a lift of 565 pounds. In fact, in 1957 at the age of 22 and with zero football experience the Pittsburgh Steelers invited him to training camp as a defensive lineman. The Steelers knew how strong Bruno was and with his wrestling ability they felt he might be a great candidate to play defense in the NFL. The experiment never went anywhere, but Bruno was reflecting on it with Bills Defensive Coordinator Dave Wannstedt and former coordinator Ted Cottrell at the golf outing. Cottrell grabbed Bruno’s hand and marveled at how large and powerful they still were today at the age of 77.

Bruno once told me the story about the time he wrestled an orangutan at a carnival back in Pittsburgh. Sammartino was working as a laborer on a construction site and he was 19 years old. The carnival came through town and featured this orangutan that challengers could wrestle and if they stayed in the cage for ten minutes they would win $50.00. Bruno’s co-workers urged him to go down to the carnival and challenge the ape, which he did.

As Bruno described it “this monkey was stronger than any man or weight lifter I had ever met and he was throwing me around like a small child.” Humiliated in front of his co-workers, Bruno decided to change tactics and he charged the orangutan and pinned him up against the side of the cage and began to pummel the hairy critter in the belly. The trainer immediately jumped in and chastised Sammartino for throwing fists, something that was explained before hand as off limits, and disqualified him. Bruno never won the $50, but I’m sure his co-workers were impressed none the less.

Bruno Sammartino was good friends with local wrestling legend Ilio DiPaolo and they both hailed from the same region of Italy. Bruno was younger than Ilio by about five years and he looked up to DiPaolo in more ways than one. “Ilio was a great man and a great wrestler,” said Sammartino. “Ilio was a strong role model and his love of family and friends always impressed me.” That is obvious considering Bruno is still making trips to Buffalo on behalf of Ilio’s memory some seventeen years after his passing.
